Humans…a question for philosophers…a miracle as per religion….evolution as per scientists.
Life…a simple truth for philosophers….a duty as per religion….a challenge as per scientists.
Culture…a habit as per philosophers…a path of goodness as per religion…entertainment as per scientists.
Superstition…a POS (power of suggestion) as per philosohers…words of the wise as per religion… coincidence as per scientists.
Each individual moves in his own school of thought.
Superstition can be thus defined as each individual’s perception in different ways. Some look at it as the truth borne out of facts to which there is no substantial proof, some look at it as a waste of time and for some it just an inner fear that generates into a belief .
Superstition has come through ages where in the belief was related to the success or failure of an activity , which was hence related to an event prior to the taking place of a particular activity and then on to be misconceived as to be the reason for the success or failure.
For eg: it is believed that if a cat crosses your path you will never reach the destination of the journey that you are undertaking, sometime later it was redefined as the cat has to be black, this may have happened when the prior instance in which a cat crossing the path did not have any effect on a journey undertaken.
If a cat can change lives we guess it has to be greater than god almighty.
I for instance would worry if a cat crosses my path, the only condition in which case is that either I should be a rat or a small bird but even in this case I may not have to worry long since in all probability I wont be alive to think any further.
Then there are people who believe that some people have an ill-effect on others meaning if we see a particular person’s face our day will go completely bad. There is a small story about a sweeper who worked in a king’s palace.Everyone believed that seeing the person’s face first thing in the morning brought bad luck. The king who never believed this decided to try it out against the advise of his ministers. There was only one minister who was game to the idea.
The sweeper was given instruction to meet the king first thing in the morning. The sweeper out of fear decided to be near the king lest he gets late in coming. The next day saw the king seeing the face of the sweeper first thing in the morning. As the king saw him an unknown fear crept inside him.He walked towards to bathroom and just as he entered he slipped and fell as he missed a step. The king while shaving cut himself. The day that followed brought many other bad news.
The king was convinced that the sweeper was a bad omen and decided to get him beheaded. The sweeper could do nothing but weep silently.
The minister who supported the king in giving the superstition a try went to king and said”Your highness, it is a very great decision that you have taken to have this man killed because he is a very bad omen. You saw his face in the morning and then on things went wrong for you,the punishment befits him,but then what punishment should we award to the person whose face this man saw in the morning which is leading him to his death. The king was shocked on hearing this since he knew that the sweeper had seen his face in the morning first, so in which case the king was a worse omen than the sweeper himself.
The king felt ashamed and set the man free. The sweeper was awarded a thousand gold coins and was told to leave the palace. After a few weeks the king heard about a man who had such glory on his face that one look at him and all the troubles vanish. The king was very keen to know about this holy man who could change lives. The king set out to meet him with his trusted minister. As he reached the house of the holy man he saw a large crowd gathered outside the house. The king who was in disguise asked a man from the crowd about what was going on. The man replied “This holy man came here a few weeks back and started a small dhaba, anyone who eats food from this dhaba gets cured of illness”. The king was quite surprised at the statement and asked him “Does this holy man claim all this” the man replied” The holy man never utters a word, he just gives the food but people who have eaten his food have been cured”. The king who was having a toothache decided to try it out. He told the minister to get the food for him and he waited a few feet away. The minister came back to him with the food and told him to eat it. Miracles of miracles the king’s toothache was completely cured after eating the food.
The king now wanted to meet the holy man and he requested his minister to take him. The minister smiled and said” My lord, I think you still haven’t understood that these things are nothing but superstitions and you should not be carried away by it”. The king was amused at the minister’s answer but nevertheless he wanted to meet the holy man. The king got a shock of his life when he met the holy man who was none other than the sweeper whom he had once awarded the death sentence for him being an ill-omen.
The king realized his folly and turned back and smiled at his minister. This is the story of Akbar and Birbal.
While understanding the subject we have to accept the fact that superstition is nothing but the power of suggestive thinking, if you think bad, bad will happen, if you think good, good will happen. So while not being too descriptive about the subject I feel that being positive paves way for a good life but these are not to be mistaken to be categorized as a superstition or for that matter a miracle. Superstition if is for the good follow it, but if it is detrimental to you or anyone else discard it.
Superstition is again related to the conscious and sub-conscious mind.Dreams for example are nothing but the visualization of the inner thoughts that are brought to screen from the sub-conscious mind during sleep. It has been scientifically proved that as man sleeps his sub-conscious mind awakens to the activities that have affected him in the conscious state.
So to believe that anything that you see in a dream verily comes true, gives strength to the fact of POS.
Astrology,Numerology,Palmistry are nothing but an assimilation of POS.Most of the time when an astrologer says these things are bound to happen each individual subconsciously starts the POS activity in his brain cells which ultimately give wings to the so called “prediction” and makes him to believe that “Astrology is so true……”.
Believe in the power called god, believe in his positive attitude of giving you what is best for you and see life changing.
No man or animal can change anyone’s life…only you can change your life.
